"Yes you can buy salmon from grocery stores and use it to make sushi..."

Yes you can buy salmon from grocery stores and use it to make sushi. Just make sure that you buy the fresh salmon, which you can freeze to make sushi later on as well. To see if a fish is fresh, check the smell of the fish, it should be salty not a bad smell and the eyes of the fish should be very clear, not cloudy. The scales of the fish should be whole and smooth. If they are then the fish you are buying is fresh and you can make sushi with it. Sam Winterberg

Q. Can i eat raw sushi that has been in the fridge overnight?
i bought some salmon sushi from a grocery store this afternoon. it was made fresh in the morning, and i have eaten sushi from this store before. unfortunately, i didn't get the chance to eat it today. it has been sitting in my fridge for the last few hours. is it still okay to eat tomorrow (about 15 hours after it was purchased, maybe 24 hours since it was made)? forgot to add, the "best before" date is for today (the day i bought it), same as the "prepared on" date.

"Do not try to eat it if more than a week...."

yes you can. do not try to eat it if more than a week.

Q. Can i eat sushi i buy from the grocery store raw?
i am in love with sake nigiri sushi (a raw slab of salmon on top of a small bed of rice). it is healthy, doesn't have that many calories, and is delicious! the only problem is...it's expensive! this is a meal i could eat several times a week, but i would rather not have to spend $20 at a restaurant every time i eat it. could i go to the store and buy fresh or frozen salmon and then eat it at home? or would that be dangerous? i don't understand what the difference is between the salmon at the store and the salmon at the sushi restaurant....

"You will need to go to a store that sells sushi grade fish..."

You will need to go to a store that sells sushi grade fish, not just the normal stuff in your supermarket. There's certain standards for the stuff used for sushi, for one its never frozen always fresh and much better tasting than the cheap stuff u get at the store.

Q. The salmon and tune that are found on sushi rolls, can you buy that fish at a store?
i love the salmon and tune on top of the rice. can you buy it seperately? and it is uncooked yes??

"It must be sashimi grade..."

I agree with the previous answer. It must be sashimi grade. Sashimi grade is flash frozen right after catching, so it does not sit in in transport. It is, therefore fresher.

Q. Any reason why i can't buy a chunk of raw salmon from the grocery store meat department and eat it raw?
we eat salmon as sushi and slices of smoked salmon on a bagel, so would there be any problem with simply eating a raw chunk of salmon from the grocery store meat department?

"You need to eat sushi grade fish if it's raw..."

Yes! Unless you want a parasitic takeover of your body or a foul case of worms (possible death), you need to eat SUSHI GRADE fish if it's raw. It's especially cut from the fish and extremely fresh for this purpose. OMG!! Do not listen to the Tards above me!

Q. Where can i buy sushi ingredients?
if i have a sushi kit and a rice maker, i figure i can buy salmon and other fish at a local farmers market, but i'm wondering where people can get seaweed. will it be at regular grocery stores or at places like whole foods? how hard do i have to look for seaweed to make sushi rolls?

"Fish prepared for cooking and fish prepared for sushi will be handled much differently..."

It depends on the store, seaweed should be at most normal stores like Whole Foods, otherwise you will need to go to an Asian market/store in your town. Make sure the fish you're buying from the farmer's market is sushi-grade, if not, you could get very sick. Fish prepared for cooking and fish prepared for sushi will be handled much differently, and have different store-shelf lives. The best option is to commandeer a boat from a wretched fisherman and attempt to pirate onto a Japanese sushi-boat in the deep blue sea. Make sure you bring your Sword of 1000 Truths or it may prove to be overwhelming.

Q. Is it okay to eat salmon sashimi that has been frozen for a week?
i've got a piece of salmon in the freezer, and planning on eating it as a sashimi. it has been stored for over a week now, bought it at my supermarket. we don't get labels such as sushi grade here, but sushi restaurants buy it from the same store too. do i just clean it (wash and dry) and eat it straight away?

"You should only eat the freshest of salmon in that way..."

You should only eat the freshest of salmon in that way. The restaurants may get their salmon there but they will have an agreement to get the very freshest stuff, whereas you may have fish that has been on display for a day or two. Furthermore defrosting it may also mean it has been sitting about for longer too. It is probably perfectly fine, but it may not taste as nice as really fresh fish will.

Q. Where can i buy cheap salmon roe (fish eggs/ ikura/ caviar)?
i want to make ikura sushi, but can't buy salmon roe locally. such a bummer- i could buy it in the east coast at some fish markets and at russian grocery stores, but in the south it's nowhere to be found. i've found some places on the internet, but shipping is a killer. anybody have any thoughts, both on the inexpensive places to buy it and who carries the best quality salmon roe. thanks guys!

"At least to me unacceptable for good sushi..."

it depends on where you live. the sushi-grade salmon roe is indeed a little expensive, and you are right, shipping is a killer. the stuff you buy in stores is waaaaaaay oversalted and, at least to me unacceptable for good sushi. I use Northern Haserot (a company which supplies foods to restaurants) their suppliers have never disappointed me, stuff I ordered through their suppliers was always A1. Give them a holler, they will put you in touch with reputable supplier. If they do not service your area ask and contact a similar company.

Q. Can i get brain damage from eating too much fish?
i have been eating a large amount of sushi and fish lately because of the health benefits of the protein and omega fatty 3 acids, and i thought i was doing something good for myself; however after reading a recent article documenting a study done in the uk, i have come to discover that the fish that is manufactured today contains large amounts of mercury, and that people (especially children) have acquired low levels of mercury poisoning affecting all sorts of things from kidney damage to decreased mental functioning. now i am extremely worried after all the fish i have been consuming. i had two store bought lunch trays of salmon sushi today ( i ate it all), two tuna sandwiches yesterday, and fish for dinner last week. how will this effect me? also i bought the sushi from the local supermarket.

"You can get a lot of problems from eating too much fish..."

Yes, you can get a lot of problems from eating too much fish. There's an actor (I believe it's Jeremy Piven???) that has been talking about it lately.
