 Q. Can i eat sushi i buy from the grocery store raw? i am in love with sake nigiri sushi (a raw slab of salmon on top of a small bed of rice). it is healthy, doesn't have that many calories, and is delicious! the only problem is...it's expensive! this is a meal i could eat several times a week, but i would rather not have to spend $20 at a restaurant every time i eat it.
could i go to the store and buy fresh or frozen salmon and then eat it at home? or would that be dangerous? i don't understand what the difference is between the salmon at the store and the salmon at the sushi restaurant....

 Q. Is my smoked salmon still okay to eat? i bought smoked salmon from the grocery store, and it was frozen, but i got side-tracked on my way home, and got there two hours later. the smoked salmon was not frozen anymore. i put in in the freezer after that. is it still okay to eat, or should i throw it out?
Smoked salmon can sit out at room temperature for hours - The smoking process preserves it

 Q. Can i freeze fresh fish? i bought salmon steaks at the store (refrigerated section) last friday, and today (sunday, which is also the sell-by date), when i realized i wouldn't be cooking it as soon as i thought, transferred them from the refrigerator to the freezer. how long can i keep it like this?
"Fresh is best but freezing them is your best option if..."
lay them out on parchment paper, blot dry and freeze them. then vacuum seal them and put them back in the freezer. vacuum sealed they can last up to 6 months or even more. after 6 months they will start to lose a bit of flavor and nutrients. they may become a little mushy when you freeze them though as the ice crystals formed by the moisture in the meat freezing, will break down the cell walls. fresh is best but freezing them is your best option if they won't be used right away.

 Q. Is it okay to eat salmon sashimi that has been frozen for a week? i've got a piece of salmon in the freezer, and planning on eating it as a sashimi. it has been stored for over a week now, bought it at my supermarket. we don't get labels such as sushi grade here, but sushi restaurants buy it from the same store too. do i just clean it (wash and dry) and eat it straight away?
"But it may not taste as nice as really fresh fish will...."
You should only eat the freshest of salmon in that way. The restaurants may get their salmon there but they will have an agreement to get the very freshest stuff, whereas you may have fish that has been on display for a day or two. Furthermore defrosting it may also mean it has been sitting about for longer too.
It is probably perfectly fine, but it may not taste as nice as really fresh fish will.

Lemon Pepper Salmon

2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons soy sauce (optional, sometimes I use melted butter and garlic powder instead)
lemon pepper to taste
Directions
1.Preheat the oven broiler. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
2.Place salmon on the baking sheet. Mix the melted butter and soy sauce in a small bowl, and brush over the salmon. Sprinkle salmon with lemon pepper.
3.Broil salmon 6 to 8 minutes, depending on thickness, or until easily flaked with a fork.

 Q. Where can you get fish for sushi? where can you purchase the fish to make sushi at home? specifically i'm looking for yellow tail and salmon. i've gone to several groceries stores including all of the major chains, central market, and an oriental grocery store. central market and the oriental store both sold frozen "gormet salmon" but neither of them had yellow tail. i would have preferred fresh over frozen, but i purchased the frozen salmon from central market, let it thaw in the refridgerator over night and had it for lunch today. it did not taste (or look) anything like the salmon i'm accustomed to. does anyone have an idea where you can purchase fresh sushi-grade yellow tail or salmon (that tastes like the stuff in the restaraunts)? i imagine it would be a lot harder to come by, but i'd also like to know where you can buy uni?
thanks,
chris
i'm located in dallas
"But try to make sushi with smokey pink salmon..."
lady, I born and live in Honduras, even here we can´t get fresh Yellow Tail in the city, if we want it so fresh as you want we have to go to Northern Coast caribbean Sea and buy it to the fishermen there.
So, as far as I undestand you can´t get so fresh in Dallas.
Sorry,
But try to make sushi with smokey Pink Salmon, Shirmp, Avocados, etc
Goog luck

 Q. Baking wild alaskan salmon with skin on? i have baked salmon a lot, but lately all i can find is salmon with the skin on. all the grocery stores around here only carry farm raised and i am so tired of it. anyway, i bought some frozen wild alaskan salmon, but it has the skin on.
i've always cooked my salmon on a baking sheet seasoning it with olive oil, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese. if the skin is on i cook it skin side down with the same seasonings. a separate tray for broccoli and cauliflower which i season the same way i do the salmon. i would like to bake this differently, maybe even with butter. i'm not looking for healthy tonight, i'm looking for the most flavor. can i cut the skin off before i bake it, or is it best to just bake it and then peel the skin off? i hate the darker part of salmon that is just under the skin, i find it to taste nasty. i would like to take that completely off, but it's so hard to do after it's cooked, hot, and flaky. also, i moved out of my parents house and am short on baking sheets. can i just wrap this up in foil with certain ingredients without needing a baking sheet. i'm open to new suggestions. please share your ideas or best recipes with me.
thank you everyone. sorry for the long description.
