    Q. Does old wiring go bad?

Old wiring can go bad depending on how old the wire is and where it is put. If it is a wire inside of the houses roof or in walls it may last a long time and will not easilly go bad. Wires can be bitten in the roof by rats but other than that old wires don`t go bad that quickly inside of a house. Outside of a house wires can easilly go bad depending on how protected the wires are and if they are in pvc pipes. Brian Lawson

    Q. How do i know if my wiring is ok?

To know if your wiring is ok then find out workers who can find out whther wiring is ok or not. The wiring is similar in many electrical places. The wiring will not be ok if the wiring was not wired properly. The wiring should not put people in electrical danger. electricity with wiring can kill. get proper wiring. sandra james

    Q. Could bad wiring in my house cause my fan to break?
could bad wiring in my house cause my fan to break.. i had 3 fans that broke in 3 days... and will it break my laptop? and i was curious if i plug my aplliances into a surge protector would it protect it from breaking.... all the fans just stopped...

What did the Fan do when it broke? Did it burn up, slow down or just stop? If you have Voltage in your house that is excessively Low OR High you can damage your Laptop. It is not typical for the wiring to cause this though. You may have a problem with the transformer that supplies the power to Your home. Which would be something for the Power Company to take care of. I am talking about power in the US. If you are outside the US, I am not sure. Is there anything else in the house that is having power problems? As for the Surge Protector, they will work for surges but NOT Under-power problems.

    Q. Could it be bad wiring from switch to light?
we have switched both the switch and light. breaker is on. when the other light was up, it would come on sometimes but not always and got more frequent at not coming on. so we got a new switch thinking it was that. same problem. got a whole new light fixture thinking something was going out in the old one. first time on the new light worked. cut off to turn back on, nothing. any other ideas would help. we have switched both the switch and light. breaker is on. when the other light was up, it would come on sometimes but not always and got more frequent at not coming on. so we got a new switch thinking it was that. same problem. got a whole new light fixture thinking something was going out in the old one. first time on the new light worked. cut off to turn back on, nothing. any other ideas would help. by the way, all overhead lights on are on the same breaker and this is the only light in the house causing problems. by the way, all overhead lights on are on the same breaker and this is the only light in the house causing problems.

sounds like only problem it COULD be then is the feed going to that fixture from another fixture(outlet/pigtail) is loose, shot of being the fixture itself that coudl be the only problem. solution: shut off breaker, hopefully you have attic access, and from that wire follow it back to where its tied into. strip the wire and reconnect. turn on the fixture, there are other ways to test that its not a break in the wire itself, such as volt meter/continuity tester

    Q. Symptoms of a bad wiring harness?
what signs would there be of a computer wiring harness going bad? i have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee 4.0l 6cyl. i've had some issues with a rough idle, and had a loose connector having to be zip tied to the computer because it was loose and causing stalling. now that it's zip tied, there's still a rough idle and trying to determine if it is the wiring harness causing the other problems also.

Only in severe cases have I seen a wiring harness cause rough idle. Not to say it cant happen. Start out by performing a compression test on all the cylinders. If one or more cylinders have less than 25-45 psi diffirence from the highest cylinder that may be your problem. Also check for any vacuum leaks around the throttlebody and intake manifold. By spraying carburator fluid. Vacuum leaks causes a rich condition thus bad idle. Fix any vacuum leaks you come upon. Another test you can try at home is by, while the engine is idling carefully one at a time remove the fuel injector wire connectors (pigtail) and see if their is any change in the idle. Note: replace the pigtail before going on to the next one. So basicaly one at a time. You will notice the idle get worse when you remove the pigtail. Thats normal. This means the fuel injector is working fine. What your looking for is no change in idle. If you remove a pigtail and thiers no change in the idle then you have found a problem with that fuel injector. Replace and see if that fixes your problem. Heres a few troubleshooting steps hope it helps. If not I will be looking for your ? and try to offer you more tips.

    Q. What are signs of having bad electrical wiring?
how can you know if the wiring in your house is bad? our lights flicker badly when air comes on, and sometimes for no reason at all, we got through a crazy amount of light bulbs, and we've got two lights that have just stopped working all together, the front porch light and the laundry room light, the laundry room light, the light went out with a pop, and now the thing only turns on sometimes. i'm renting, and the management company doesn't really like to fix anything, so are these seemingly to them minor problems worth a fight to fix?

You have described an acutely dangerous situation - do NOT pass go, do NOT collect $200 - get hold of the management company and state clearly that the condition puts you and your family in danger of your lives from electrocution or fire. They are certainly worth a major fight to fix. It is one thing if you have a 'hot' go out killing an outlet or two. But entirely elsewise if a 'neutral' goes out leaving potentially very dangerous conditions or the possibility of sending 220V across some of your appliances or light-bulbs (blowing them out in short-order during the process). Repeat: This situation is acutely dangerous to you and yours. Get them to fix it *properly* - up to and including calling the local code official if they are non-responsive. It may be as simple as tightening a few connections in the panel or in various splice-boxes here and there. But whatever it is it *MUST* be fixed forthwith.

    Q. How does a load-test determine a bad connection within the wiring of a home?
what if the bad connection is with the utility company and not with the wiring in your home?

a load test can determine that as well...at my job they use a thermal camer to look for hot spots in the wiring. this usually means loose connection or corossion.

    Q. In my final question do circuit breakers detect bad wiring in the house to prevent fires?
lately i haven't had an outlet overloaded but the last time it was overloaded was in july of 2006 when i installed my ac but since then it hasn't turn off the electricity.

Circuit breakers don't detect bad wiring, the detect when you are trying to pull too much electricity through one wire. Copper wires are excelent conductors, but they're not perfect. A small amount of resistance generates a small amount of heat, and the more electricity, the more heat. A circuit breaker detects when the amount of electricity running through the wires may be high enough to make the wires hot, and shuts it down for safety. So if your circuits blow, its just because you're trying to pull too much electricity, not because your wiring is bad.

    Q. Just rented an older home could bad wiring cause my fridge to short out or not work properly?
the temp in the fridge is around 55f and the freezer is around 32f i have moved it to a different plug with little sucess

Unless you moved the frig in the upright verticle position you may have a big problem. Laying a refrigerator down for transport cause all of the oil to run out of the crankcase of the compressor. I recommend you let that frig sit for a day. Then try it again, but I would unplug it for now. The damage might already be done or it could just be oil is trapped in the refrigerant lines and causing the refrigerant metering device to be blocked. You might get lucky and it might work again once it sits. The negative consequence is a burned up compressor, but since it's still doing some cooling I have hope for your refrigerator. Let it sit.

    Q. How can i detect bad wiring?

    "Usa not enough info..."

USA Not enough info. What do you mean by bad wiring - wires that are damaged? Wires that are not hooked up correctly? Wires that are undersized or the incorrect type for the application? Wires that are in poor condition due to age or abuse? Or, are you trying to find out if if enough circuits were installed in your house?

    Q. Can bad/old wiring make your electricity bill significantly higher?
i rent an older house(70's maybe so not real old) but i think they wired it funky. could that be some of the reasons for higher electric bills. i know its winter they just seem high even for winter

Do you have electric heat? If so, it sounds more like a problem regarding the insulation of the home as opposed to a problem with the wiring. If your heat is NOT electric, you may have a faulty component somewhere (Check your furnace fan if this is only a winter problem).
