If there is no fraud suspected, it should be processed within 48 hours of the company receiving an official copy of the police report, a list of the stolen items & receipts/values/estimates, and your "proof of loss" form, which sometimes has to be notorized.

i am wanting to know how much time one has to file an insurance claim after damage has occured. for instance, your house gets hit by a tornado but your in a coma and dont come out until a year later. this is not my case. just trying to make question clear. is there a time limit on how long you have to file an insurance claim after damage occurs?

There's no "set in stone" rule. Theoretically, you can file a claim five years after the incident. THERE IS NO LEGAL TIME LIMIT. Well, that's on a homeowners policy. For liability policies and med malpractice, it's different. The problem is, the longer you wait, the harder it is to prove the damage was from the claimed incident, and unless you're just coming out of a coma, you need a pretty darned good explanation. Real life example: I had a client put in a claim for missing scheduled silver, a year and a half after they moved - claiming it was missing in transit from the move. She hadn't done a complete inventory, and when she finally got around to it, discovered the missing silver. The claim was paid ($6,000 roughly).

In my jurisdictions, under your fact pattern (far away from neighbors real property), if you don't have a lien holder, insurance (that you submit a claim for), you can burn your own property. Now some counties (here )require a burn permit, though some require you to pay for a fire truck to stand by. And it would be wise to notify your local law enforcement agency of your date of burn because they will be aggravated (due to many calls reporting the fire) to have to send someone out to check if the burn is supervised or it is an actual accidental fire requiring government intervention (fire trucks). Farmers and ranchers burn old houses , barns , chicken coops and enormous piles of downed trees all the time. You are responsible if the fire gets out of control. The liabilty could be staggering. Your rural fire department is probably wanting a practice house (as the other posters stated), rural fire departments have little local training facilities and the volunteers really need all the practice they can get. You would benefiting your community to offer the building to them. Responsible burning would include a earthen fire break, a satisfactory water source, and at least 3 able people with access to outside communication for a building the size of a house, and the utility companies must be notified so your heat does not damage any nearby supply lines (even underground).. You are not permitted for the smoke to cross a roadway, so the wind and it's speed will be a significant factor. You really should let the professionals handle this burn. But, barring a local ordinance, you can burn your house for no gain under the above conditions. I apolgize for my answer, I have not learned to tell the out- of- US posters ; my answer is only correct in my region of the US.

It sounds like you may have not reported the claim yet. If that is correct call your agent or insurance company ASAP. You do NOT have to wait until you put together a list of missing or broken things. Waiting to report the claim can cause problems. Report it ASAP and the company will tell you what info they want you to provide them. If you have already reported it to your insurance then you should have at least 30 days to get your list to the company. In most theft claims we handle the homeowner has the list done within 7 to 10 days.
