if the wires were installed correctly, and your wires made from copper and you use it in their maximum rate which is 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, then your wiring can be last to a life of almost 20 year, but in fact the cables are never at maximum loading so the cable may be living 30 or 40 years, you can check the material which your wiring made from easy

The wiring in your house will last for a period of even more than 20 years if the wires were installed correctly, and your wires made from copper and you use it in their maximum rate which is 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.By also making sure that the wiring is done correctly with a qualified electrician and also use the best wire like copper which lasts longer as compared to the aluminum which does not take a longer time. This will also extend the time for it to last.

Q. How long do you have to file suit due to faulty wiring causing a house fire?
i had my house completely re-wired in spring of 2000. the job was done poorly and started a fire within the walls. am i out of luck in the state of montana?

Firstly, the burden of proof is on you to establish that the wiring done by contractor X is the wiring which caused the fire. If the damaged house is the subject of an insurance claim, it may be that your insurer, before paying out, would seek to pursue the insurer of the electrical contractor. In many states there is a 'peak body' which authorises contractors and issues their permits - these bodies typically not only will advise on your rights, and look into your claims against a contractor 'on their books' - BUT also, such peak bodies also typically impose a small tariff on all registered contractors which goes into a claims fund - for the very purpose of paying out claims to persons who have suffered loss from dodgy workmanship. I do urge you to seek out the state authority (perhaps federal) which registers and authorises contractors to provide building services direct to the public - talk to them. (TIP: If you can't find the right connection talk to your local government office and/or elected government official/s) And BE SURE to collect and assemble as much evidence as possible - good luck

Q. How long would it take six men to complete one basic one-story house and install wiring, etc.?
no, this is not one of those word problems. i need an approximate time-frame for a project.

it depends if it is installation of trucking, conduit, or surface... for my experience i would say 3 to 4 days, not above, including installation of all accessories

Q. How long does it take for electrical wiring to catch fire?
i'm writing a script, and i need to know how long it takes. the character is going to purposefully set fire to a house, but more of an explosion. i know just the basic leaking gas pilots on stoves & stuff, but for electrical wiring, how long would it take? and what if fire was put to wires, what would happen???

If you would like to get a better feel for how long it takes for an electric spark to start a fire, I suggest you go to the MythBusters website and view the episode where they tried to set Christmas trees on fire with tree lights. They do one test with sparking wiring.

Q. I'd like to run wire from my house to my dock, the run is approx. 400 feet long. what is best wire to use?
someone suggested using 8 ga. solid wire in conduit. i plan on running a couple of lights as well as having a couple of outlets for a radio and possibly a battery charger. thanks for the input. ivan

If you run conduit, and a load as light as the one you suggest, you can use 10-gauge stranded THHN protected at 20A with a GFIC device at the dock. You could also run 8-2 UF cable direct-buried also protected as above. With the UF cable (Underground Feeder), make sure you bury it at a sufficient depth that it will not be subject to mechanical damage, snow-plows, garden spades or other damage in the future. 400' is not so great a distance for a light load as you might think for line-drop. For a 5A load at 120V, your drop with #10-stranded will be less than 5V (3.5%). Were I to suggest, I would go with PVC conduit and the stranded THHN - the single, major advantage being that you may purchase THHN wire easily in 500' coils eliminating the need for any splices within the main run. You would have to special-order a 500' reel of the UF-cable.

Q. How long will it take to build a single storey house?
our current house has been sold so we have to vacate by 12 march. we want to apply for tenancy at a new house - problem is, it's still under construction. we walked through yesterday to see frames are up, wiring and heating ducts in place, etc. this morning we saw men all working on this one site. i'm assuming the next stage is the plasterboards. how long will it take to see the house completed including plasterboards, carpets, painting, appliances, fixtures etc? the house is a 3 bedroom, single storey, standard kit home type of construction. it sits on a small 361sqm block. i foresee no delays as far as weather goes. and by the looks of it, there's not a supply shortage in workmen. if we sign a lease and lock ourselves into an agreement for this site, will we make our 8 week deadline and make it into the new place in time? fyi - the house is located on the mornington peninsula in victoria, australia edit: in addition to this, the house is bricked, roofed, and windows are in place

If it's a project home, from start to finish it should take approx. 12 weeks to build. That's if it's built by a large volume project home builder.

Q. My floor furnace will not stay on long enough to warm the house. i have a new thermostat set at 1.2?
i had to replace the thermostat. i have it set at the longest setting 1.2 , however the furnance will not stay on long enough to warm the house. it is a gas furnace and was working fine till i replaced the thermostat. i was thinking i might have crossed the wires when i replaced it since there were only two and both were black. any advice would help.

Floor furnaces almost always use a millivolt generator. You must use a millivolt thermostat to have proper operation. The contacts on regular thermostats have problems passing the current. some states don't allow the sales of mercury type thermostats. As far as crossing wire that's not the problem. All the thermostat does in your case is makes and breaks the wire going to the gas valve. One other thing to remember if the millivolt generator is weak then you need to contact a contractor that will still work on them. You might be better off having a pro look at it due to safety reasons. Good luck Thomas L

Q. House wiring question--extra wire okay to leave?
i have to run a 12/2 wire in my crawlspace--just one wire to replace an existing wire that is damaged. i have to cut and splice the wire coming down through the floor, and place the splice in a box. i would eventually like to snake the new wire all the way up into the bedroom and eliminate the box, but haven't the time to do so right now. can i use a longer wire than needed and leave the excess coiled up in the crawlspace, if it's properly secured, so that i don't have to run a longer wire later?

Sure as long as youre not leaving 250 feet of it... lol Just make sure the wire is secured and that your nuts are extra tight. Also, rodents enjoy nesting in wiring bundles because of the heat produced from the coiled wire so make sure they cannot get into your box or otherwise you might be doing this all over again!

Q. Aprox. how long does it take to complete the building of a house when it's all framed up inside.?
all would be left would be insultaing, wiring, plumbing and drywall, then just mudding and floors/carpets. aprox how long does each of these tasks take to complte?

Depends on how well coordinated all the trades are, whether there are any backorders, changes or other delays, how big the house is, how fancy it is, strikes, etc. The critical path requires some things to be done before others, while some can be done at the same time. Plan on it being at least 25% later than the estimate. Seems like the last 2% of the work takes 20% of the time.

It all depends on how fast the contractors get it done, I've seen it done in about 7 business days, but that was every contractor there every day working hard. I have also seen it take as long as a month.
