"For bad wiring and also do some fixing if required..."

You shouldn`t be asking for a guide to check your wiring since this isn;t the kind of job you would want to do yourself. Hire an electrician and for about 100 bucks he can chek your house for bad wiring and also do some fixing if required . If something is wrong with your wiring you should have noticed light bulbs failing by now. Leo Collins

To verify or check if your house has bad wiring the best way is to hire a good electrician in your area and he can easily find out if there is bad wiring in your house. Electricians normally charge on hourly basis depending upon the area you live. Mark James

Q. Help electricians or meter men or women, whats wrong with my electric meter or is it bad wiring?
my meter spins fast then slows down contiuously when my stove is on and sometimes when it is not. i called the electric company they did a test and said that the meter is ok and that when the stove burners heats up and slows down thats what makes the meter speed up and slow down. i checked in with my neighbor and mothers meters when they have their stove on and theirs is not doing that. they changed the meter and it is worst than the first i think they gave me a bad meter they gave what was on the truck and it was not new. my bill has went up bad. a dump truck caused a fire by pulling down my wires and meter from the house. they replaced the wires where the meter was but every since then i have been having problems. please seirous answers only this is eating up my wallet i am afraid to turn on my stove i have turned off the water heater, ac and unplug things when i am not using them. thankyou in advance.

"Water heaters always turn on and off as do thermostat controlled house meters..."

One of the problems with comparing your meter with your neighbors is that the stoves may work differently. If a stove has old fashioned electric elements, then they come on and glow and don't turn on and off to maintain heat. Newer stoves with other arrangements would turn on and off and the level of power changes and the meter goes faster or slower. Water heaters always turn on and off as do thermostat controlled house meters. You may actually have a problem, but probably isn't the meter, but something else in the house. There is also the possibility that the old meter was defective and you were paying less than you should have - it is far more likely that a watt meter under charges (due to drag) than it over charges. The first step is to shut off everything you can and observe the meter. If it is still turning, then something is still connected and you have to shut that off. Because of the damage you mention, there is a slight chance of a direct leak - unlikely but possible. If you turn off the breakers the meter should stop. If it doesn't, then call the power company. Assuming it does, then turn on one breaker at a time and see when it turns on - the power usage is on that breaker to track down. There is a kind of amp meter that clamps on over a wire instead of requiring cutting and fitting in line. It will show you the amps instantly and directly and since the voltage is pretty constant, relate closely to the watts being used. You can try various appliances and see both their peak usage and the pattern of their usage.

Q. Could the main fuse box for the house be bad?
could the main fuse box for the house be bad? what do you think from my description of problem do you think the fuse box may be bad also. i not sure where the problem is but i think it may be in the fuse box itself. i checked both electrical main wires coming to fuse panel and have each has 110 volts and when checking both together i have 220 volts. but when i check the fuse box two buzz where the fuses get there power one has 110 and the other only has like 30 volts. but when i check them both together i get only like 40 volts. this fuse box has given me problems before in the area of where the two fuses that go to the main well they have been not making a good connection and sometimes i have bump the outside of them to get them to seat and work right. but i think there a much bigger problem right there. i think the whole fuse box is bad. and may be the cause for shorts that i having in my place. and other electrical problems.

"The three wires coming to my house..."

I had a similar problem. but it was out on the power pole. The three wires coming to my house, one was loose and broken at the transformer. You will have to call the power company to take out and check the meter box and beyond, so give them a call. At least you will know it is inside and not troubleshooting something that is not even there. If it is inside, it is probably a bad connection, turn off main and tighten any loose connections.

Q. How do i diagnose bad light sockets?
a couple of years ago i had a bad socket and it popped the circuit. i replaced the light fixture. last night after replacing a light bulb in this fixture, i started to smell something burning a while later and determined that the source of the burning smell was the socket to the light bulb i replaced hours earlier and i noticed that the light was flickering but the other lights on the same fixture weren't. i turned off the light fixture and removed the bulbs to check and make sure they were the correct wattage and they were. i looked at the sockets and the two sockets that didn't flicker look clean while the socket with the flickering light had a socket that was corroded. since this is the second light fixture to have a bad socket, there must be something wrong with the wiring. what are some things that can cause sockets to go bad in a light fixture? i doubt that i just happened to replace the first light fixture with a brand new light fixture that was defective. what causes bad light sockets? this is the only area in the house where a bad socket has happened and it has happened twice! i do not know how long the first fixture lasted since it was part of the house when we bought it but it looked like it was quite old. what brands of light fixtures are the best in quality?

"If there's a problem with your house wiring..."

Just because it's new, doesn't mean it's good. If there's a problem with your house wiring, it will affect the entire fixture, not just one socket. Sure, the fixture may have been made , packaged and shipped as one unit. That doesn't mean that all the sockets (that were installed into the same fixture) were from the same socket box. (sorta speak) Example: If there are three sockets in one fixture, one of those sockets was the last one in the supply box. Open new supply box and install the two remaining sockets. Fixture done. If I spend my money on fixtures for me or my customers, Rudd: http://www.ruudlighting.com/ or Progress: http://www.progresslightingoutlet.com/?OVRAW=progress%20lighting%20fixtures&OVKEY=progress%20lighting%20fixture&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=1943215521&OVKWID=63548654521 or Bellacor: http://www.bellacor.com/ More money, but I still enjoy the fixtures that I put in my house twenty years ago. Q. What do i need to have checked out before buying a house?
i am looking into buying a house that needs a lot of work. ((i live in nyc so am taking advantage of the downturn in market to pick up a deal.)) i found what appears to be a steal but it needs work. what are the most important parts of the home that i should have inspected in order to find out if the property is worth purchasing. i want to avoid buying a money pit. what sort of problems should i avoid? bad roof, bad plumbing. what problems are fixable? bad dry wall, bad electrical wiring? if anyone knows a good inspector/contractor in nyc/brooklyn/queens area please let me know.

"Check out the background and qualifications of your inspector..."

Have a thorough building inspection done. Different inspectors have different expertise and may more closely examine different aspects. Check out the background and qualifications of your inspector. Accompany the inspector on the inspection and ask questions and listen carefully to him. This will help you know exactly what you are buying. Many inspectors have formerly worked in the trades and can tell you an approximate cost for various repairs. Make sure he gets up on roof, in attic, in crawl space, in garage, in short everywhere in premises. DON'T buy more home than you can easily afford. Calculate the cost of home repairs in there, too. Can you stand to live in it as is? Can you stand to live in it as work is done? Can you afford to have work done before you move in? Strongly recommend floor sanding and drywall repairs BEFORE you move in because of all the dust they generate.

Q. Bad ground wire in chevy 95 lumina?
read carefully.......... my friend has a 96 chevy lumina. the battery kept dyeing on the car and would not start. he got a new battery and got a few good runs of it and then the battery went dead again. we pulled the alternator out and bench checked it. the altenator checked good. jumpstarted the battery and got the car to his house. this is where i a totally confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! turned off the ignition and tried to recrank, car was totally dead. not enough juice to even make the tone when the key is in the ignition. looked around and told him to wiggle the ground wire, the car electrical system starting clicking. tried cleaning the terminal to the ground wire and put it back on. nothing at all. couldn't even jump the car again!!! i put a test light on the positive of the battery and touched it to the gound wire (terminal and bare wire). the light comes for 1 second and then fades out every time. what gives? it is 1 solid ground wire, i can't find the other end though. what should i due? where should i start? how do i do it? its a 95, sorry

Are you sure the battery has not gone flat? You can replace the earth (ground) wire quite simply. You say that you cannot see the other end of the earth wire, this does not matter because you can fit another one and bolt it to a different place. What you must do is to make sure that the battery negative terminal, the car body and the car engine are all connected by a good heavy duty battery cable. Just buy two new leads from the auto shop and bolt one to whatever you can on the engine (it must be a good clean tight connection) the other end to the battery terminal. You must also fit a second lead from either the battery ground terminal or the engine to the car body.

Q. A good friend's car caught fire by electrical wiring. why?
it's an old mustang. we bought our cars as project cars and are trying to fix them up to get them back up and running. we were over at his house today and when we turned the key, it started and then we shut it off to check for any leaks and then we noticed smoke coming from hood and when we opened it, the wires caught fire back by the firewall where the wires connect to a terminal. any ideas why? the only thing we did was rewire a wire that went bad earlier when we tested it. i don't remember where that wire went but it was a 12 gauge wire with a fusible link and then it went to a 16 gauge wire i believe where it connected. what we did was to just buy a straight 12 gauge wire and connect it without the fusible link and then having it go to a smaller size wire. he said he asked on here and the answers he got said that was ok to do. so, what happened? too much pressure to handle or what? we put the fire out (really quick and burnt two wires like two inches long), so we were going to replace the ones that only burnt. the others were fine. that should be good right? i guess now we can go back to using that fusible link. it's just funny because we started his car many times before and nothing happened. just today. i don't think we have to get a whole new wiring harness. after all, once it starting smoking, we immediately put it out. we later looked at the wires and the terminal looks perfectly fine; however, the only damage was two wires that burnt. so, i'm just thinkin' that we can go to our local parts store and buy those wires with the gauge and rewire it. that was the only thing that happened. nothing major, but just a couple wires melted.

Something shorted out> Best start looking at what you were doing before the burn out> If all was well before>

Q. Need help bad, electrical problem, how do i get a diagram of the wiring of my car? ???
i have a 1993 dodge ram van b250 for 3 years i have not had heat. a/c is fine. the first year had very little heat, 2nd year even less heat, 3rd year no heat, totally gone. the blower is fine, not real strong but fine. here's the problem. my back street mechanic checked my fuses under my inside dash to see if a fuse was blown to my heater. now one of my wires under my hood was sparking and it blew out my car alarm. also, my car had to be jumped every morning because the battery went dead due to this. the wire that was sparking was unplugged but now the blower doesnt work. i strongly believe that the wire unplugged goes to the blower, but not sure. it isnt the alarm wire, definately. this wire is along the back wall of the engine with all the other wires. its pink. and connects to the battery. how do i get a diagram of the wiring of my car? how do i get it to stop sparking ?? i have a new heater core. antifreeze over flow and in radiator is fine. i also had it flushed 2 times. new heater control valve new thermo and gasket new thermostat housing new water pump please tell me the experience you have with cars

"First a wiring diagram may not completely help if the alarm is aftermarket..."

First a wiring diagram may not completely help if the alarm is aftermarket. Go to the library and get the Chilton manual for 1993 Dodge Pickups. The Wiring diagram should be there. I suspect your original problem was one of 2 things The heater hose is collapsing or is not connected {one can bypass the heater core by loop routing the heater hose. The Heater core could also be bad or clogged. The Second possible item is that your switch may be bad, There is a third option but less likely, there may be a vacuum issue preventing the damper from closing {on the outside vent" the heater core may be heating up, but cold air coming in is overwhelming any affects. My first guess is the heater hose. Best advice dump the shade tree and take it to an ASE certified shop!

Q. Whos havin a bad day?
think you're having a bad day.... check it out these actual cases. fire authorities in california found a corpse in a burned-out section of forest while assessing the damage done by a forest fire. the deceased male was dressed in a full wet suit, complete with scuba tanks on his back, flippers, and face mask. a postmortem test revealed that the man died not from burns, but from massive internal injuries. dental records provided a positive identification. investigators then set about to determine how a fully clothed diver ended up in the middle of a forest fire. it was revealed that on the day of the fire, the man went diving off the coast, some 20 miles from the forest. the fire fighters, seeking to control the fire as quickly as possible, had called in a fleet of helicopters with very large dip buckets. water was dipped from the ocean and emptied at the site of the forest fire. you guessed it. one minute our diver was making like flipper in the pacific, the next, he was doing the breast stroke in a fire dip bucket 300 feet in the air. some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. ___________________________________________ still think you're having a bad day? a man was working on his motorcycle on the patio, his wife nearby in the kitchen. while racing the engine, the motorcycle accidentally slipped into gear. the man, still holding onto the handlebars, was dragged along as it burst through the glass patio doors. his wife, hearing the crash, ran in the room to find her husband cut and bleeding, the motorcycle, and the shattered patio door. she called for an ambulance and, because the house sat on a fairly large hill, went down the several flights of stairs to meet the paramedics and escort them to her husband. while the attendants were loading her husband, the wife managed to right the motorcycle and push it outside. she also quickly blotted up the spilled gasoline with some paper towels and tossed them into the toilet. after being treated and released, the man returned home, looked at the shattered patio door and the damage done to his motorcycle. he went into the bathroom and consoled himself with a cigarette while attending to his business. about to stand, he flipped the butt between his legs. the wife, who was in the kitchen, heard a loud explosion and her husband screaming. finding him lying on the bathroom floor with his trousers blown away and burns on his buttocks, legs and groin, she once again phoned for an ambulance. the same paramedic crew was dispatched. as the paramedics carried the man down the stairs to the ambulance they asked the wife how he had come to burn himself. she told them. they started laughing so hard, one slipped, the stretcher and dumping the husband out. he fell down the remaining stairs, breaking his arm. ______________________________________________ still having a bad day? just remember, it could be worse... the average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the exxon valdez oil spill in alaska was $80,000. at a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were being released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. a minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both. _____________________________________________ still think you are having a bad day? a woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from his waist towards the electric kettle. intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a handy plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places. up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his walkman. _______________________________________________ still think you're having a bad day? two animal rights protesters were protesting at the cruelty of sending pigs to a slaughterhouse in bonn, germany. suddenly, all two thousand pigs broke loose and escaped through a broken fence, stampeding madly the two hopeless protesters were trampled to death. ____________________________________________ what?! still having a bad day?? iraqi terrorist khay rahnajet didn't pay enough postage on a letter bomb. it came back with "return to sender" stamped on it. forgetting it was the bomb, he opened it and was blown to bits. there now, feeling better?

how horrible am i that i laughed so hard i really did start to pee my pants lol too funny!!!!!!!!!

Q. Induction cooktop blows internal fuse?
i have acquired a used 1993 kenmore induction cooktop from someone that says the two small burners work fine but when he turns on the larger burners, they blow the small 20a fuse inside (not the fuse in his house). i haven't hooked it up to our wiring yet (which meets the requirements for this cooktop), and i haven't looked inside it yet. what do you think the problem could be, so i know what to look for? could his wiring have caused it (his house is of an era that used aluminum wiring, and may have not had the required dedicated 40a circuit)? bad power module? bad capacitor? something specific to induction cooking technology? should i check for something in particular before i hook it up to my house and see if the larger burners work here? anybody have similiar problems with an induction cooking unit? thanks! i suppose i should add this unit has two power modules, with one small and one large burner going to each module. i don't have a manual, but i do have a parts diagram and parts list, and the previous owner gave me extra fuses. the fuses he gave me do match the ones listed on the part list, so it's probably not an improper fuse.

"There may be a short circuit in wiring to the big burners..."

Of course, there may be a short circuit in wiring to the big burners. It is possible though, that the fuse is of the improper rating. If the fuse blows when the burners are not turned on, it must be a short circuit. It could be in the feed to either or both burner switches, or the branch to one burner switch. If it does not blow when only one burner is turned on, but does on the other, you can guess where the trouble is. If it blows only when both are turned on, it is likely that the fuse is of too low a rating.
