Q. How can i get my dog to quit chewing my stuff? she does not chew my husband's stuff. i have tried spanking.

"If you take away her boredom she'll quit chewing your stuff for attention..."

It's possible she is taking your things because hse likes your scent on them. You need to find her some toys that she can chew on. Maybe you have an old teddy bear in the closet somewhere or an old shirt she can have to sleep with. Dogs chew because they are bored. If you take away her boredom she'll quit chewing your stuff for attention. There are really great toys you can buy for dogs that have the fun/yum factor. Toys such as Kongs work really well with chewing prone animals because as the dog chews - which is fun - it's also getting bits of food - which is yum. Good luck with your dog. Oh, spanking does nothing for a dog except make them frightened of you. Especially since, unlike people dogs have no sense of ownership, if they see something that looks good to chew, they'll chew it. Not because it's yours and it will piss you off. They don't realise what they're doing is wrong so all they see is you coming toward them yelling in an angry voice and then hitting them for no reason.

Q. How can i get my dog to quit chewing up stuff in the house when left alone?
i have a job that sometimes makes me work 8 hrs a day. my boyfriend and i are almost always home( if not me then he is). but when we are not i l leave my dog otis inside. i feel bad that i have to leave him inside, but our fence is halfway torn down, and the landlords havent fixed it yet. i dont like to use the chain that i have to put him on when i do put him outside, i feel bad when i leave him outside on the chain. at least in the house i know that he can move around more. it is getting cold and for 8 hrs a day i get sad when i have to leave him outside or alone. i dont like the chain. well when i leave him inside when i do have to work and i come home, he always finds something to chew up. the last time it was the bottom of the door, before that it was the remotes. before that it was my brand new baby stuff. i dont know what to do to get him to stop chewing up stuff. and when i do get home he knows that he did something wrong and he lowers to the ground.

Put him in a kennel. He will be fine. You said that when he is alone it is only for a short time so he needs to be in the kennel rather than doing damage to your stuff and the landlords home or apartment. If you don't put him in the kennel he will be costing you a lot more money. He needs to know who the leader of the pack is!

"Chewing habits can cause you unnecessary inconveniences because your dog may chew your socks..."

Most normal dogs will bite and chew. You cannot completely erase this behavior, you can regulate it and influence the dog’s behavior. To control your dogs’ chewing behavior, you should know why he chews or bites. Chewing habits can cause you unnecessary inconveniences because your dog may chew your socks, shoes, books, money etc. Chewing not only harms your household possessions, but it can affect your dog’s health too because he may chew items like electrical wires or pointed objects. Reason of chewing Usually dog’s chew when they are teething. Teething causes irritation based on what the dog chews. When the growing teeth pierce your dog’s gums, it causes an unusual feeling and is a painful experience. To overcome this pain, the dog will chew anything. Your dog may also develop food habits due to chewing. Psychologically, dogs chew to relieve stress and anxiety. Benefits of chewing Chewing does result in the release of endorphins, body chemicals that can help calm your dog down. Chewing also removes plaque from your dog’s gums and teeth, making them healthier and strong. Tips to stop your dog’s chewing • Do not let your dog chew on things by keeping them out of his reach. Allowing your dog to chew old things will not help you in any way because it encourages the behavior. In addition, chewing old things also encourages him to chew other objects, possibly new ones, later on. • Provide chew toys to your puppy to keep him away from the things you don’t want him to chew. You should also keep his sleeping and playing areas clear of anything you do not want him to chew. Chew toys are healthier and helps keep your dog’s teeth strong, clean and free of plaque. You should be creative when training your dog not to chew. One solution is to use hollow chew toys and fill it with your dog’s favorite treat as reward. • Do not try to take anything away from your dog that he is chewing because he may hurt you. • Place his chew toys directly in front of him to introduce them to him and encourage him to chew on them. • Praise your dog whenever he chews the “right” thing like his chew toys. This helps your dog differentiate between he things he can chew and those he cannot. • Use crate training to control your dog’s chewing habits. Whenever your dog is alone in the house, you should leave him in crate to prevent him from chewing anything other than his chew toys. • Keep things you do not want your dog to chew out of his reach. • Vary your dog’s choice of chew toys. Like people dogs do get bored with the same toys. Therefore, keep a variety of chew toys for him. • Prevent your dog from chewing your furniture by using anti-chew spray. This spray sends out a strong smell but is not harmful to your dog. Talk more to your veterinarian about these sprays if you cannot keep out things you do not want the dog to chew out of his reach.

Q. How do you get a 7 month old puppy to stop chewing stuff up in the house?
i have a 7 month old shiba mix puppy. he loves chewing up my kids stuffed animals, fleece blankets, my kids bedding, my daughters coats, winter boot inserts, and also chewed holes in there bean bag chair!!! i realize most people would say get rid of the dog but my son loves him and i would like to try to keep him. i have tryed punishment by puting him outside for a few minutes and ignoring him for a little while and it did no good. i have bought him chew bones and a ton of toys and he seems to prefer to chew up and on other things in my house. what do i do with this puppy? do i call it quits or keep trying? if i do keep trying what can i do to make him stop this behavior? please help!!!!

"He will be a wonderful dog &..."

1. Supervision & crate him when you can't 2. When he takes an unapproved item in his mouth, remove it with a scolding sound or word, and QUICKLY replace it with an approved item & PRAISE, praise, praise! 3. Do these things consistently. He is still in that 'fun' chewing stage, which will most likely pass at 14-18 months. Good luck! Remind yourself: Some day, he will be a wonderful dog & you can look back and laugh about this rotten adolescent stage. Crates save lives: One way by not having a dog die from eating an undigestable foriegn body, and another by not having an exasperated owner turn the dog over to a shelter!

Q. How to keep my dog from chewing stuff up?
every time i leave my house my 8 month old lab/boxer likes to chew on my carpet! she doestmess with anything else nor does she do it when i'm home. i've tried smacking her nose, rubbing her nose where she chewed, spraying her with water, putting her outside for a while, tried putting her in a cage but then she pees in in and then sits in it.....any advice to how i get her to quit because i'm tired of seeing holes in my carpet and need her to quit so i can replace it

stay with the crate when your not home. after a few days she'll get tired of sitting in her own mess. you may have to rinse her down but she'll get the idea. she just wants to punish you for leaving. dogs are pack animals and they get worried about being alone. some people leave a tv or radio on for company, but i don't know how effective it is.

Q. I have year old pom male i can't train to quit chewing?
he has chewed thru at laest 10 halters collars and leashes not just his but my other dogs too just bought new collar for other dog again and he chewed it off her with in 10 min. he is what i call the dog from hell.... can't afford all the leashes and stuff if i have to buy one every week or more my other dog is a shih tzu and 9 yrs old and very good hubby bought pom and dog thinks he is my dog lol...had 2 shih's but male died last year that is how we got pom

Buy something called Bitter Apple. It's a spray that will make whatever you spray it on taste horrible. You could also try using a chain leash for walking, as metal isn't very good for chewing on.Good luck!

Q. Is it normal for my dog of 9 months to be chewing things up for the second round?
she chewed stuff up when she was only a few months old, but quit for a while. now she is back to doing it again, and i don't know what to do. if this is normal, any recommendations for alternative chew toys? she ruins toys quickly and when she gets bored she moves onto my furniture and walls. i do walk my dog everyday for 30 minutes. 10 minutes after the walk today she decided to shred the wood around my window...don't ask me how.

"Your dog is bored..."

Your dog is bored. Exercise and stimulate her mind.

Q. 8 month old dog won't stop chewing on everything?
i have a bichon/japanese chin who is 8 months and is continually finding things to chew on and get into. he will chew on anything small including ant traps, cedar balls, magazines, wrappers, boxes and all sorts of other stuff. he climbs and jumps on things too and has gotten into candy. we can't seem to put things out of his reach and its getting to be a hassle. anyway we can train him to quit chewing on things? he goes nuts for chew toys and rawhide strips but still finds inappropriate stuff. thanks i'd crate him but i'm afraid that he will hyperventilate because he'll scratch and cry for hours.

"But your dog should already be past the teething phase..."

Puppies tend to chew, but your dog should already be past the teething phase. Chewing can frequently be a sign of frustration or boredom. A lot of people think small dogs don't need to be walked, but they do. A small dog like Bichon or Japanese Spaniel (Chin) should be walked twice a day for at least 30-45 minutes each time. This alone will alleviate a lot of the desire to chew. In addition, you need to provide your dog with mental stimulation. For instance, 3-5 minute obedience training sessions several times a day (teaching the 'Leave It' command would be a great way to start) or a puzzle toy, like a Kong. In addition, you need to correct the dog every time you catch it chewing on something inappropriate. A firm, "No!" and remove the inappropriate object. Then ignore the dog for a period of 5 minutes or so. Alternatively, once he learns the "leave it" command, you can tell him to "leave it" when he chews something he shouldn't. REGARDING CRATING: You need to get out of your dog's head. He will get used to the cage as long as you make it a pleasant place. Your dog will feel more secure, and comfortable if it has a den of it's own.

Q. How to stop a dog from chewing?
i had to quit my job so i am home all day every day, she goes for at least 3 long walks a day.last august i bought the cutest little puppy, i was told her mother wasn't looking after her so she came to her new home when she was 6 weeks old(i know that is to young to leave her mother but she wanted nothing to do with her). she chews everything, she just finished chewing up my pants! she has chewed up the coach, carpet chairs, the corner of walls, table legs, sneakers, socks, underwear, rips the garbage up when ever she can. i just dont know what to do anymore. can some one please help me? she has sooo many chew toys its not even funny, from bones to kongs, ropes and every other toy that is sold for dogs. she does get a punishment when she chews on stuff, she knows its bad as when i walk towards her she runs away. if i was to get this spray i would have to spray everything in my house, she can open the drawers to my dresser to get to my clothes. she stays in the living room where i am all day, she will be sleeping on the coach and next thing you know theres a big giant hole in it. she isnt allowed in any other part of the house as she has already ruined it. i have been doing all these things except the spray things, i couldnt do that as i would have to spray every last inch of the living room. i have even tried spraying her with water but 30 seconds later there she is chewing on something. she is starting to think her name is "no" as she just hears it sooo much! i have spent mor money on her toys and bones than on groceries, she does not need more toys! i cant put everything up where she cant reach it, i cant glue my coach and chairs and everything else to the ceiling. she has gotten a few smacks, she knows its bad but wont stop. if you were to actually read this you would see that she does have kong toys, she has 9 of them in total. i cant keep her in a crate for the rest of her life. you dont understand that i am here all day, she is not unsupervised, she is soooo sneaky!!!

Well, normally I would say buy plenty of toys to keep her entertained. But it seems you have tried that and it doesn't work. I also had a "chewer". I thought he would never stop. He ate my cloths, couches, I had to buy a new computer monitor because he knocked it off and chewed it up. When toys didn't work, I tried the spray that claims "he wont chew things up anymore! You will never have to worry" Yeah right.. It doesn't work. Not at all. I think he liked it. We have a spare room in our house, and it was empty of everything, we changed the floor from carpet to tile. And started to keep him in there. Now Im not saying that you need to lock your pup away, but it saved some stuff. We called our vet, and he said that we should try obedience classes. I thought, this will never work but I had nothing to lose. And surprisingly, it helps a lot. The class doesn't teach your pup to not chew, but it teaches him that you are the boss and when you say no, you mean it. Now King (our pup) doesn't chew. The class helped a lot, but I think part of it was that he just grew out of it. Classes aren't to expensive and very worth it.

Q. What are the traits of inbred dogs?
i have an 8 month old male pit bull. i got him from someone who i don't know and they accidentally had a litter & they gave the puppies away b/c they couldn't afford to feed them. they said the parent dogs were nice family dogs. i have known pit bulls in the past & they were loyal & smart. my dog is very smart, he is loyal to me, but he is stubborn & he will chew the couch up & he knows its wrong b/c when i catch him he gets scared & runs in his cage. but he won't quit doing it. i punish him too. he also won't listen like when i tell him to get into the house, he acts like he can do what ever he wants! but then if i say "do you want a treat" he comes running into the house. 2 of my friends got his brothers & they both got rid of the dogs b/c they kept tearing stuff up. this isn't normal pit bull behavior. my dog has been nuetered & is well taken care of. i am thinking that the parent dogs may have been related & this is why the litter has bad traits. what do you think?

It normal puppy behavior. You need to take him to a trainer that will teach you how to train him.
