Sigrid | "You can`t stop the dogs from barking..."
You can`t stop the dogs from barking. It`s the way they are warning you that you are on their land and you better get off quickly. Some friends of mine suggested I should make that gesture like I would throw rocks at them. Well don;t do that. It will only make them more hostile towards your obvious intention to attack them. If a dog is barking at you best thing to do is pass by without showing fear. Leo Collins

"Driving the dog nuts - the dog can't or has limited smell over the fence..."
Well? Think of it like the mailman visiting everyday about the same time and rattling at the door or box and leaving... To the dog, this is a taunt or a challenge, driving the dog NUTS - The dog can't or has limited smell over the fence... So with that... One method is to have a friend or relative walk by the fence and then have the person stop, take your dog out around the fence so the dog can smell and see who it is. You might ask a stranger if you can bring the dog around to say hello... If you do this enough, the dog might wait 30 seconds before it start barking. The last thing you would ever want to do is have a person look or shout over the fence, this is "Bark or an intrusion" and the dog is going to do exactly what it is suppose to do.

 Q. The neighbors & dogs causing me & me dogs stress with barking & fence running, any advice on how to handle? we just bought a house this past september with a huge fenced-in backyard. the yard was for our 2 dogs (now 3). we have 3 neighbors on each side of our backyard and 2 of the 3 have younger kids and dogs. our dogs grew up in apartments, condo's, and a trailer - they are not very well socialized and are non-aggressive, but are very stranger people and dog weary. every single day, our one neighbor behind us leaves their little yorkie-terrier type dog out for hours now that the weather is getting nicer or will have that dog out in the backyard as they are working on their yard or sitting in the backyard for hours with them. i know that its their yard, they have every right, but we only let our dogs out 3 times a day, at 5am, 5:30pm, and 9:30pm since our dogs are constantly running to the back of the property, into a row of mature pine trees and shrubs to fence-run and bark with that dog. we've had to limit their outside time (they are really only let outside to go potty, we don't just let them out and leave them out unattended - habit from the way we raised them in other homes and not having that luxury or option). the neighbor doesn't do anything at all when they hear our dogs barking and running together - they are playing, but our dogs do not come back in the house for as long as that dog or the neighbor is outside. they get fixated or obsessed with this little dog or people and do not listen very well. i've had to crawl into bushes and trees to drag my dogs back into the house after 30-minutes of unsuccessfully drawing them away from the distraction and the entire time, the neighbor is going about his business and not helping the matter. yesterday, when i let them out after feeding them after work, they were, of course, outside again, and this time his kid screamed, "omg! the dogs! m----- (their dog) is so scared!" to which the man said, "just take the dog in the house" and that's the only way our dogs calmed down, but i immediately brought them in the house any way since they were so hyped up and they ended up soiling in the house instead because they were too distracted and didn't do their business outside. this happens too frequently for my liking, but we are almost forced to bring our dogs inside every time they or their dog is outside. i realize the problem is in our dogs, but can anyone offer some advice on how i can try to handle this issue? i don't want to be known as the "bad" neighbor, but our dogs and we have every right to enjoy the fenced-in yard we made a requirement when house hunting just for our dogs! thanks!
"Whatever they wish their side of the fence..."
I can understand your predicament but as you say they have every right to allow their dogs to do whatever they wish their side of the fence .
If this was me then I would create a space between the fences by building another fence that they can't see through about 6 ft away from the back fence.
Expensive but worth it I would say.

 Q. Neighbors and barking dogs... i went to look at a house to rent the other day that i really like but when i got to the backyard there were dogs on both sides of the fence barking. both neighbors on my right and left had at least 2 dogs each.
the back yard is private with a wooden fence but i'm worried about the noise.
do you think the dogs will bark like this every day at all times during the day or will they get used to me?
my greatest fear is i move into this house and i wont be able to enjoy the backyard because of these very loud and annoying bull dogs.
i have nothing against dogs in general but i do enjoy peace and quite when i can get it.
"Will be able to deal with the barking dogs..."
They might get used to you, but they also might not, not being able to see you probably makes them want to bark, they know you are there but they just can't see you, probably drives them crazy! lol I would suggest you not take the house unless you will be able to deal with the barking dogs , better to save your money and find a house with neighbors without dogs if you can, that way you can atleast have your peace and quite.
Good luck!

 Q. How can i stop my little yorkie from barking like mad at all the neighbors dogs? he waits by the back to door acting like he has to use the bathroom and then he shoots out the door barking like crazy at the dogs on the other side of the fence. he does this with all dogs. is there anything other than a bark collar that will stop him from doing this? it is embarrassing.
LOL, yeah, yorkies can bark, cant they! My yorkie has a thing for birds. He sits at the back door and can bark for hours! But we have found that a squirt bottle works like a charm. Our yorkie hates water though. So with just one squirt, he's a quite little mouse! Then he gives us this cute little look like, "what did I do wrong?"

 Q. My dogs charge the fence and bark at everyone that walks by - how can i stop this? i have two dogs, a collie and a retirever mix. they are both wonderfully good, and well behaved dogs - but they both love to bark. they are outside a lot, and our house is on a corner, so it it is 3/4 fence outside. anyone that walks by, the dogs will charge, and start barking ferociously at, and the people either get completely startled by it and walk to the other side of the road (a lot of times there are young children with them) or they will keep on walking, but it is a very big nusance. i have tried just about everything there is out on the market (except the citronella collars, too $$) and nothing works...at all. they are notorious barkers.
can anyone help me with this?
"And before they barking so loudly they can't hear you..."
This is a training issue. You will need to take several days (probably a long weekend would be best) and be outside with the dogs for however many hours they are outside. Whenever you see that they're going to start their charge at the fence, and before they barking so loudly they can't hear you, give them a firm but calm command to be quiet. (Call the dogs by name and say, "Quiet". ) Don't scream or yell, just use a calm commanding tone of voice. Give the command only once; don't repeat it over and over again, because the dogs will learn to ignore the command the first five times you give it, and only respond to the sixth.
The instant the dogs stop to look at you, tell them "yes!" to mark the proper behavior and then given them a treat and lots of praise.
You will have to be consistent in this over a period of several days for your dogs to get the idea. They'll soon learn that when they bark they get nothing, but when they're quiet, they get attention and praise.
don't use shock collars or citronella collars. They don't teach the dogs anything except to be afraid when the collars come out.

 Q. How can i finally after several years approach a neighbor about their dogs constantly barking? we have lived here for many years and simply have tolerated the dogs barking next door as we didnt want to upset anyone. these dogs are outside in a pretty large cage 24 hours a day and it is approximately 15 feet from both my bedroom and my daughters. they are directly on the other side of the fence on the side of my back yard. it is more then bothersome we have way too many times been awoken in the middle of the night or ealry morning to their 15 minute long barking sessions. and worse they never tell their dogs to be quiet or anything. and conveinatly their rooms are on the opposite side of the house and yard from their dang dogs cage. how can i after so long suddenly say do something about your darn dogs!!!! if you have any advice please share it i'd be greatful.
Politely at first and if they don't respond, check to see it there is a noise bylaw in your community that they are breaking, and contact the Authorities to see if they can help. It is too bad you have waited so long to say something but that should not limit you to your right to have peace and quiet at night. Good Luck.

 Q. Dog barking at fence, how to stop? my irritating neighbor continues to walk their dog past my fence (i live on a corner lot). i've asked him to walk the dog on the other side of the street seeing that he lets his dog pee on my yard and poop and walk slowly while sniffing my fence and irritating my labradors. he continues to do this...
last night we got into a screaming match... now, i have made my labs stay inside all day because of his vile temper towards me and the dogs... i need suggestions... dog whistle, dog barking siren, plant a line of shrubs on the outside of my fence to keep him off my yard..... what?
my yellow lab goes crazy when this dog gets near my fence on my yard.....
i don't care if my dog is barking... my dogs don't bark unless another dog is at the fence... on our property!
i do mind if they are doing it intentionally and it seems as they are.
b y the way teri....
what does it matter if my dog is barking, it is my fence.....
Try putting some red hot pepper around it. Or some of the things that have in sports good stores that prevent this type of problem

"K9 charger around the bottom of the fence and one around the top to..."
I have had this problem also and we solved it with running a hot wire with a K9 charger around the bottom of the fence and one around the top to keep them from jumping on it.
You can get everything you need at a farm store. One zap and the problem was solved. Now the wire is still there as a reminder, but the charger has been off for 6 months.
I bought a solar charger so I don't have run any electric to it and we used plastic step in post.

 Q. How to stop my dogs from running the fenceline and barking? my wife and i have three jack russell terriers who mind pretty well, but when our neighbors dogs are out, and start barking, then our dogs get riled up and start barking. i've tried planting smaller barberry bushes but that doesn't help. the main problem is that our hoa decided on split rail fences with wire on one side.....now the dogs see each other and go after each other through the wire. any help or advice would be greatly appreciate.
"When they start barking tell them quiet..."
How frustrating that would be. You could use an electronic bark collar, but you would have to buy 3. It would be a temporary thing until they learned to not bark at the other dogs. Or else you could stand outside with them while they are out. Make a reward system. When they start barking tell them Quiet! If they stop as soon as you say it, give them a treat, or give them praise. Eventually they will learn to stop when you say Quiet! Good luck
