 Q. Help :( sent a financial aid appeal but didn't need to, don't know if i will still get my loan? okay. i just made a major mistake (i think). i began school at a community college in august 2009. i didn't do so well in two of my classes. i got below a 2.0 and my cumulative gpa was below a 2.0 because i failed two of my classes. according to the rules of the college, i should have been placed on academic probation (i can recieve grants but not my loans) for the winter 2010 semester. so i sent an appeal letter and filled out the financial aid appeal form in hopes i could get my loan disbursement at the end of this month.
so, today i called the financial aid office at the school and the woman i talked to took a look at my account. she asked why i thought i was on academic probation and i told her i didn't do so good in some of my classes, then i told her i had sent an appeal letter to the school last week. she said i would have recieved something in the mail or via e-mail if they were going to change my financial aid package. then after i said i had sent an appeal letter, she said she didn't know if that would affect my elegibility. i had already accepted all of my loan in july, when the school recieved the info from the loan company. my account still shows i will be getting all of my loan. so does this mean i will, or are they going to take it from me? when i logged into sallie mae (my loan company), my status is "loans partially disbursed; waiting for disbursement". i mean, she said the letter i sent could be good for the future (?) i guess maybe she was meaning i will get my loan this semester, but my aid could be jeopardized this following fall if i don't bring my grades up? help :( does anyone know if i will get my loan?
"The reason why financial aid money is split for each..."
They can't put u under acedemic probation until the next yr, because u applied before failed any class, meaning that the money they promised u is already urs...however, if u continue to do bad in school, u'll automatically be put to aca. probation...
the reason why financial aid money is split for each semester is because they dont wanna pay u full just incase u dnt do as well as expected so they'll give half this semester, and deduct the amount of the next pay for how much money u spent on the total # of classes u failed (only for the next semester)....
hope i helped ^ _ ^

 Q. Will i lose my financial aid (grants and federal loans) if i get married? my question is basically to know if i will lose my financial aid? i actually just found out today that i qualify for about $5000 in federal grant money including money that my university gave me. i also want to accept another $4000 in federal loans for the 2010-2011 school year. my academic plan is to graduate in may of 2011. i already applied for fafsa march 1st of this year and want to know if i have to change my marital status if i get married this month? and if i do get married this month will i lose the money that is already granted to me in the 2010-2011 school year? if you have had the same situation or have knowledge on this subject please help with some answers.
thanks for reading this question! :)
"You won't loose any money granted to you for the 2010-2011 school year..."
Your marital status on your fafsa is "as of" the day you fill out the form and your marital status stays that way for the entire duration of the academic year. You can not (and are not even allowed) to update or change your marital status once you fill out the form because your marital status was single on the date you fill out the form and that is correct in their eyes.
So no, you won't loose any money granted to you for the 2010-2011 school year. When you fill out another fafsa in March of 2011, then you will have to report not only your income, but also your spouses, and this might effect your aid for the 11-12 school year, but not anything before then.

 Q. Please help me with understanding my financial aid package for nyu-poly? i got my financial aid package today, but i am a little confused about some of the figures on here and am wondering if anyone can help me out.
on my package, there is a specific figure called "total aid towards tuition"* the disclaimer states the following*the total aid towards tuition amount does not include college work study, stipends or any other aid that does not actually go towards tuition. recommended loans must be applied for and approved by the lender before a credit can be applied against your balance.
but then above this, is the types of grants and loans offered with an accept/decline option next to them and the amount for both semesters of the 2010-11 year. these options include the polytechnic grant, college work-study, pell grant, prekins loan, direct subsidized loan, direct unsubsidized loan, and the recommended parent loan.
the calculations are made and subtracting the "total aid for tuition" i am left with a balance of $19,544. now what confuses me is if the figure for "total aid for tuition" accounts for the above award options or will they be summed to the "total aid for tuition" value to reduce the $19,544.00 balance?
thank you!
(should you need more clarification let me know please)

 Q. Wedding finances: should we wait 1.5 years as planned, or extend the engagement? my finance and i got engaged last weekend after being together for six years. i am going into my second year of teaching and have a decent savings. he is finishing his last year of college and has little to no savings. we are not anticipating financial help from either of our families., so basically the wedding spending is on us. or rather, me. we've discussed several options, but in the long and short of it, my fiance said he is going to leave the decision making to me because the money we'd be using is in my possession. we originally planned on a 1.5-2 year engagement, but have been discussing fall 2010. his grandfather has leukemia and has requested we marry before he dies. (sigh.) so that is another aspect we are trying to factor in. i am frustrated that we are in this position where i will be paying for our wedding. i am not sure how i will feel about it in the future, and i don't want to feel resentful, esp. starting off our marriage. we have agreed that if i do end up paying for the wedding, that we will both be contributing to replace the money we used once he is employed after graduating. here are some ideas we have thought of:
-proceeding with fall 2010, using a combination of my funds and perhaps taking out a loan (which i think is not such a good idea...why take out the loan when you don't need to?)
-proceeding and having a simpler wedding
(we just found out today that even getting a church is going to cost around 1,000, which i am blows me away!)
-waiting the extra year so that my fiance can also contribute more
i'm not sure if there are other options, and i'm not sure what kind of consequences each choice will have. any ideas or enlightenment on the situation would be greatly appreciated. thank you!
"It is both of your money..."
Well the way I see it is that once you are married, it is BOTH of your money. If you were not going to pay for the wedding out of your own savings, what would you use the money for after you were married? Would it still be yours alone? If you spent it on furniture or a down payment on a home for the two of you once you were married, would you still feel resentful or like it was unfair that you paid more? I urge you to think about this ... because money is the number one thing couples fight about. I am entering a marriage where I have $40,000 in student debt and no savings, and my fiance has nearly paid all his debt off. I would absolutely hate it if he held it over my head for everything that he had paid for and I hadn't.
We are paying for our wedding together by saving what we can while still making our loan payments and paying our mortgage and bills. We manage to put away about $700 per month towards the wedding - so by the time of our wedding we will have about $7000 saved (we started saving this month). We don't split the bills right down the middle to make it "fair" because we have different incomes and debts. Most of my income is going onto my loans at this point, and most of his is paying our mortgage and bills. I help with the remainder of my income by putting it away for the wedding and paying for groceries.
Either put the wedding off until you can feel better about sharing your money, or have a simple wedding with a low budget. But I think it's ridiculous to put it off simply because you want the wedding costs to be split down the middle if you already have a bunch of savings socked away.

 Q. I am currently a sophomore at a university in my state. my parents are making it impossible to finish school.? because my stepmother and my dad file taxes together, i do not get any financial aid from fafsa, even though they do not helf pay for any of my schooling. they do not pay any of my tuition, they do not give me spending money, they do not provide me with any money. so, so far i have racked up about $38,000 in loan debt that i will need to pay back beginning 4 months after i finish school or drop out. well, this december over winter break, my parents sprung it on me that they will no longer be co-signing my loans. they decided this because they don't want to be liable if i do not pay them back, i guess. my evil stepmother said that she "should have put her foot down two years ago" (before i started college). well, i started by looking at scholarships. this thing with this is, i am a hispanic/caucasian female that has a cumulative gpa of 2.7 and i am majoring in zoology. so, there are really no scholarships that apply to me because i also do not qualify for the 'financial need' criteria a lot of scholarships have. well, all hope for any scholarships was already going out the window when my step mom told me this weekend that she is now refusing to fill out my fafsa for the up-coming school year, 2009-2010. when i told her that i would do it then, she got in my face and said, "you cant." and smiled a disgusting, smart-ass smile. (ugh i hate her!). what i do not understand is what they expect me to do when they force me to drop out of school. i have finished all my generals and would now be working on my major classes, on the road to my degree. i have lost all hope and i know that without a degree in today's society, i will go no where. i want so badly to finish school and not have to live at their house anymore. so i guess as a last plea of help and advice to someone, anyone, is there any possibility of me being able to go around some sort of system and continue my schooling? i need to beat my parents in this, i cannot let them win. most parents want their children to get into school and make something of themselves... but mine (or my stepmother, i should say) doesn't seem to want me to. i don't understand!!
someone please offer any kind of advice that i could possibly use. i have also already met with the financial aid office coordinator at my school and all she told me was to either a) take out more loans or b) ask my parents for money. which i know they will not give me, nor do i want to ask.

"I will suggest that you minimize the amount of student loans you need to..."
O Ashlee, I am so sorry about this. What a witch you have for a step mom. Have you considered making your plea to your dad in the absence of your step mom. If that fails, go speak with your mom if she is around. If that fail, you will have to do the same thing that some of us have to do which is get a training so that we could put ourselves to college. Like you can learn CNA (about two months their training) or EMT (two months their training). This will enable you to get a part time job and go to school part time. With a job, you will be able to qualify for private student loans. Having a job will also give you work experience, which will make your college degree more marketable to prospective employers.
At the moment, I will suggest that you minimize the amount of student loans you need to take out. I am not sure what you are majoring in but it is not a guaranteed that you will be able to get a job with bachelor degree when you get out of college. The economy is not doing so well. I have so many friends that have a bachelors degree with no job. My best advice to you is make sure you get a bachelor's degree in a field that is in demand or that is promising. Something that you will get a great job in, when you graduate. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
Dont forget to return the favor when your step mother is of old age and in need of help.

 Q. Do you think this gutted audit the fed amendment is a "historic contribution"? it's a little sickening how this huffingtonpost article is pretending like ron paul supports this gutted audit the fed amendment.............he called it "a sell out".
besides that, who else thinks this is a "historic contribution" (chris dodd's words)....................all 98 senators voted for it..............lol {so you know: the very same senators voted down a full audit 37-62..........known as the vitter amendment}
because they care about "transparency".............just not too much transparency.
what do you think?? doesn't this one time audit seek to get information two federal judges already ruled the federal reserve had to give up due to freedom of information requests??
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/11/judd-gregg-feds-biggest-d_n_571667.html
the sanders amendment began as a reflection of language passed by the house and cosponsored by reps. ron paul (r-texas) and alan grayson (d-fla.) that would authorize a broad audit of the fed. in negotiations with banking committee chairman chris dodd (d-conn.) and officials from the fed, sanders scaled back his audit and restricted it to a one-time look at lending activity from december 1, 2007 until the present -- information that the fed has so far fought to keep from disclosing. it goes further in some respects than the paul-grayson measure, in that it mandates the disclosure of recipients of fed largesse. (background on the compromise here.)
even a year ago, it would have been unthinkable to have judd gregg and ron paul agree on anything having to do with the fed other than its street address. the momentum behind a fed audit is an indication of surging populist sentiment and a financial industry on the defensive. ...................."occasionally around here you get to make a historic contribution," said dodd from the senate well. a longtime opponent of the paul-grayson's audit, dodd's support of the compromise initially convinced fed opponents that the measure must have been gutted. a closer look, however, showed it to be a step forward. "this is a historic moment," said dodd, asking to be added as a cosponsor.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a2rzjenzqv5k
march 19 (bloomberg) -- the federal reserve board must disclose documents identifying financial firms that might have collapsed without the largest u.s. government bailout ever, a federal appeals court said.
the u.s. court of appeals in manhattan ruled today that the fed must release records of the unprecedented $2 trillion u.s. loan program launched primarily after the 2008 collapse of lehman brothers holdings inc. the ruling upholds a decision of a lower-court judge, who in august ordered that the information be released.
the fed had argued that disclosure of the documents threatens to stigmatize borrowers and cause them “severe and irreparable competitive injury,” discouraging banks in distress from seeking help. a three-judge panel of the appeals court rejected that argument in a unanimous decision.
http://www.ronpaul.com/
ron paul: “bernie sanders has sold out and sided with chris dodd to gut audit the fed in the senate. his “compromise” is what the administration and banking interests want: they’ll allow the tarp and talf to be audited, but no transparency of the fomc, discount window operations or agreement with foreign central banks. we need to take action and stop this!”
"The Fed had argued that disclosure of the documents threatens to stigmatize borrowers and cause them “severe and irreparable competitive injury,” "
A fair punishment after receiving an unfair competitive advantage in the form of bailouts....
Hey, it's better than nothing. No, it won't get to the heart of what Paul and Sanders (and Grayson?!) are looking for. But it is better than nothing.

 Q. Will i be able to get a student loans? hello, my name is brittany, i was 18 as of may 27th, 2010, i live in south central pa, and i really really would love to attend edinboro university of pennsylvania (state school) in the fall of 2010.
however, my parents refuse to pay for my college experience there because they feel that i won't be able to take college seriously and i will end up wasting their money. anyways, i'm clearly not going to get any help from them, so it's now late june, and i need to figure out a way to pay for my college.
the tuition by itself is around $14,500 per year plus the nearly extra $2-4000 for a suite that my best friend is staying in known as "the highlands". i want to room with her since we will be the only ones that are attending there from our high school, but her parents are paying for her to live in that suite and attend that college, so it's just a difficult situation.
i am the oldest in my family so i know nothing about student loans, acquiring them, and i have never had a job before (because my parents are very wealthy, and i have never needed one). if you could help me out by directing me in a way that could possibly inform me further than i am now about anything really involving financial aid for my school, that would be wonderful.
also i've read that the school you want to attend should have a lot of things that are helpful finance wise, but my school just happens to be located 6 hours away from me, and i do not have any way of getting there before my orientation date (which i still might not be able to attend) of july 27th. my housing application will be due on july 1st. today is june 23rd.
thank you so much for the help, you really have no idea what it means to me to be able to get some sort of guidance, because my parents are certainly none for me at this point and i'm really running out of time.
******also, i got accepted to this school in november mind you. my parents avoided the topic of payments until now, even though i have tried so hard to talk with them about it. they are not consistent people and are afraid of commitment. there was nothing that i really could do to gain control over the situation.
"The above answer is completely right about the loans and money issues..."
Don't choose a school b/c that is where your best friend from high school is going...and especially don't attend that school AND room w that person. As a recent college graduate i can't even begin to tell you all the stories i know of people who went into freshmen year rooming w their 'best friend' only to become mortal enemies by the end of the year and still hate each other after graduation. It does NOT work out. Get a random roommate. You do not need to be best friends w this person, but only manage to live w them. If you have a falling out, no big deal. Get a new roommate. You didn't destroy a friendship bc there never was one in the first place.
The above answer is completely right about the loans and money issues. You do not have the luxury of attending an expensive school and especially not live in a suite for freshmen year. You cannot afford this school and w/o your parents assistance you will not get enough loan money to afford even tuition.
Consider going to the community college for the first 1 or 2 years or a state university which is w/in commuting distance of your home (and which is cheaper than the other state school!). Molding your life plans around someone else (esp when that person has unlimited options due to her parents finances) is a horrible idea. If you are such good friends your friendship will last even w her 6 hours away. If it doesn't then she wasn't much of a friend, and you should be happy you didn't have to room w her.
