buying a hard drive device second hand is a wrong move in general.but it depends from where you`re getting it first , if you tried it before buying , the price.etc. so you see many factors should effect your decision a second hand hard drive device.what if the ipod you bought needs a new battery ? that will cost 80$ or maybe it needs a passcode which the seller won`t give anymore or you lost your contact with him.so regarding any hard drive device , i`d advice you get it new

contact the seller and ask for the passcode, if they ignore you , open a dispute with ebay and paypal explaining what the problem is and get your money back

You won't find a new 16GB because it was discountined. When it was new, it cost what the new 32GB costs now. You might find a refurb from Apple that will at least have a warranty on it.
