HP or Toshiba would be your best choices. Check for sales prices from CompUSA and Costco as well. Dell has a very inexpensive Vostro line on sale from their small business section.

I'm a fan of Asus they are high quality for low price.
Toshiba , Everex, or Acer Aspire are low quality for low price.
Apple, Sony, etc are way to expensive.

to do this one would go onto their websites get the phone number and ring the support line,, if you don't get an answer in a short time skip that brand.. and the same with any you have problems with getting through..

I always thought IBM was the best. But. Now its made in China! My computer class teacher told us NEVER to buy anything made in China! He said Taiwan was OK, but not China.
Guess what. HP is made in China! I thought HP was an American company. I was shopping at WalMart and looked at the boxes. They all said MADE IN CHINA! That explains the shiny finish. Chinese like flashy things.
I liked Gateway too. But. Now I hear its been bought out by ACER.
DELL, I've heard, doesn't use standard parts. If you want to upgrade, you have to buy parts from them! This may not be true anymore.
I like COMPAQ. It may be made in China too. But. I like it anyway. The case doesn't have those crazy doors! Have you ever tried to insert a floppy into one of those things? Its impossible! COMPAQ is the BEST!

As Mr. Jim N said, it depends on type of applications you wanna to run. For my self I've AOpen PC, two Acer laptops, and HP Pavilion Elite PC and I'm thinking of buy dell laptop,my room looks like NASA computer stations,lol.
I had a bad experience with acer specially with after-sale services so, I don't recommend it at all.
HP was the best, AOpen somewhat good, 9 years never broke down.

i have seen the following brands for under $500 and wondering which is the best company/best product- acer, toshiba, dell, emachines, compaq, gateway, hp
also, 10inch ones seem to be pretty cheap, are they worth it or do they totally suck? i am only going to use it for general internet and itunes, i don't need it for large files or school or anything major.

to funky character name-- is the vga port on the side where i could plug in my flat panel monitor? that would be a plus..
if your getting one with vista make sure it has 2gb or higher ram and a dual core cpu is all, if its xp 1gb ram is enough, since u said u just want it for school not games or anything major then almost any laptop 10 inch will be suitable as long u meet those requirements i mentioned. the only thing u wanna look at is the battery life then so it can last longer, they come in 6 or 12 cell, 12 being the longer last life one.

the only problem with that one is its a 6 cell

as you can see but hey its only 500 dollars, so u get what u pay for, it comes with everything else u need though so u can consider that
either that or just keep searching till u find a laptop with all 3 things u want, the nice dual core cpu ram and 12 cell battery and still under 500 dollars
if your laptop doesnt quite have the 2gb ram and etc its still gonna work just fine but it might get laggy easier if you dont take care of your laptop well, and seeing how you dont even understand the specs of a laptop well then im pretty sure it would be pretty hard for you to mainten good care of your laptop in the long run being able to keep it running as fast a year later
