Q. What if you are not up to code on electrical?

"Code is the same for electrical areas so make sure the code..."

If your buiding is not up to electrical code then you could be in trouble. Electricity is dangerous so you should make sure that it is up to code. There are inspectors who make sure that your property electrical is up to code. Up to code electrical is a must for places of business. The electrical can be put up to code by electricians. Code is the same for electrical areas so make sure the code is at highest and electrical is not faulty. sandra james

The best thing to do if your electrical wires are not up to code is call an electrician. Electrical system is really delicate and it must be perfect all the time. Any errors can cause fires. I would recommend you to call an electrician. They have the proper tools and experience for a complete check of your electrical system. /lussay

Q. Is it against electrical code to have my microwave wired to the same circuit as my kitchen lights?
is it against electrical code to have my microwave wired to the same circuit as my kitchen lights (and possibly more)? i think i recall that major appliances require their own circuit. i know electrical codes can depend a lot on the municipality but is this against general electrical codes?

"The normal but not necessarily out of code if it is not hardwired and/or..."

It all depends on when the house was built as to the code. The code changes every three years; this year is one of them. The technical answer is that it probably was not out of code at the time but would now be. Don't think that you need to run out and change it right away because unless you change the circuit it is still compliant with the code used at the time(we hope). Now if someone has just recently done this it would be out of the normal but not necessarily out of code if it is not hardwired and/or load calculations were made to ensure that the code was met. I am speaking on a national level of code (using the current NEC2005) and the only way to for sure know would be to give your local building inspector a call. Microwaves are a tricky appliance because some draw less then 5 amps while some draw over 15amps.

Q. What is electrical code and how is it used?
i am doing a science project and for my science project i have to know what is electrical code and how it is used.

"The fire safety code - the national electrical code prescribes what has to be..."

It is actually part of the fire safety code - The National Electrical Code prescribes what has to be installed to keep wiring from getting too hot and starting fires - load limits, wire size for loads, etc. Other parts of the fire code deal with gas burners, furnace, etc. The NEC is revised every 5 years or so and is the reference for most city codes to prescribe how residences, businesses and industries are to be wired. For example, new homes are supposed to have 120 volt outlets close enough together so long extension cords are not tripped over or constantly stepped on. As I recall that is about every 6 feet instead of the 1 per wall or two in a room found in older homes. On a more immediate basis for most people it sets how big an extension cord is needed to run a saw without burning the saw out because of low voltage at the end. The NEC text is not available on line. The book can be bought for about $40 online and at most city code offices. Some city libraries may have a copy, but it is loose leaf (to add changes) and theft of pages would be easy.

Q. According to national electrical code, what is proper installation of grounded duplex receptacle, ground up or
down? reason being, if metal cover plate is used and the single retaining screw backs out causing the metal recepatcle cover to rest on an energized hot and neutral plug which is not completely "pluged in" thus resulting in a electrical hazardous condition. does the latest nec code state all duplex recptacles to now be installed with the ground up to prevent such an hazard from happening?

There is no statement in the NEC, it's a matter of personal preference. Although I prefer ground up in commercial buildings because many times I have shorted a receptacle when my measuring tape dropped and crossed the partially exposed exposed prongs in the socket. (I did a lot of measuring and renovating office space.)

Q. Where can i get an electrical code book?
does anyone know where i can get an electrical code book specifically for ny state? ny state has separate electrical codes. my brother needs it to do electrical work on a house i am moving into. amazon does not have any, only united states code books. i cannot find anywhere on the internet to purchase one.

"The ny state building code incorporates the electrical code..."

From what I can determine, the NY State Building Code incorporates the Electrical Code. It is available here: http://www.bookmarki.com/2007-New-York-State-Building-Code-s/257.htm

Q. Is a junction box required for a home phone cable splice to comply with electrical code standards?
home phone cable is spliced in the attic. i was wondering if i need to enclose the splice inside a junction box in order for it to comply with the electrical code standards. i live in california.

There are fittings made for this type of connection. If you use these fittings, then no box is required.

Q. Would it violate national electrical code if a undercabinet light fixture was mounted by a magnetic strip?
would it violate national electrical code if a undercabinet light fixture was mounted by a magnetic strip and was being moved from time to time? the product does not have portable luminaire approval from the u.l.

I know that double sided tape will work (although not overly preferred), so I can't see why a magnet wouldn't. I do know that there are specifics depending on mounting types allowable depending on what earthquake threat region you're in, but as long as you don't mess with the wiring, a magnet should be fine.

Q. Where i can find the content of the philippine electrical code?
what website can i see the content of the philippine electrical code?

"In 1962 under the sponsorship of the philippine association of mechanical and electrical engineers..."

The first edition of the Philippine Electrical Code Part 1 was published in 1962 under the sponsorship of the Philippine Association of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (PAMEE). Prior to the adoption of the new Philippine Electrical Code (PEC), the National Electrical Code of the United States was the accepted electrical safety standard in the country. However, not all rules were applicable to local conditions. So there was a need to prepare a Philippine Electrical Code. It was adopted by the Board of Electrical Engineering Examiners in Board Resolution No. 9 dated November 27, 1962 and approved by the Civil Service Commission/Board of Examiners. The Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (IIEE), an organization accredited by PRC publishes and distributes the Installation Code. Full contents of PEC cannot be found in websites. You can buy the PEC 2000 Edition or its latest edition at IIEE office: IIEE Tel. # (632) 727-3552/727-3558 e-mail: iiee@skyinet.ph
