it all depends. 1. if you have a ceiling fan with a light kit installed then the black wire would be for the ceiling fan ; while the red wire would be for the light. 2. if the switch n question is a 3 way switch then the red wire would be used as one of the traveler wires

it indicates that you have a 12/2 with ground which probably is hot; while the other cable is a 12/3 with ground

I have identified the neutral and hot wires coming out of the electrical box however i am un-sure as to which wire from my 3-way dimmer switch (red or black) do i connect to the hot wire? My instincts are telling me that black is hot but i need some confirmation on this before i proceed with the installation.

Typically, the positive wire will be the one with a "trace" on it; like a solid or dotted line. Usually, the negative wire will have text running down it. The best way to check is to use a volt-meter.

it doesn`t really matter; since ground and netural is basically the same; as long as the ground is connected to the bus bar. the ground wire has to be connected in orrder for tthe 220 applicance to have a internal 120 volt circuit.

when you connected earth and neytral its means that u follow same electrical current to the earth which is more than 100M Amp.becouse of this current your ELCB(Earth leakage C .B) tripped and also this will effect in electronic ckt board which may carry very small current at thier end.

I have a scenario. I was on a website that is considered adult...I kept the website up. I then had to connect to VPN for work. I forgot to exit out the website. Could vpn detect the website. normally if i tried to pull it up when on vpn it would not filter it...

Here`s how I did it: Make sure that all the circuits have a load: turn on the lights, plug in appliances, what have you. Turn off the main cutoff in the service entrance box. (Turn off your computer first.) Turn all the individual breakers off. Remove the dead front, the metal panel that covers the wiring to the circuit breakers. Disconnect the neutral wire of interest from the neutral buss. Clip one lead of an ohm meter to the neutral. Now probe the hot wire connection at each breaker. Most will read out-of-range. The hot wire matching the neutral will show some resistance. (In my case, about 450 ohms.) Tedious and disruptive, but it worked for me. When I restored power, I left the heavy loads, like the air conditioner and water pump, toggled off, then activated them one at a time to avoid a huge inrush.
