 Q. How do i get my boxer puppy to quit chewing on things? she is 12 weeks old and chews on everything including me. she just chewed some of the carpet up in my bf's apartment. when i catch her in the act i discipline her but i'm not always there. is there anything i can put on the things she normally chews up to make her stop?
oh yeah and its not me that lives in the apartment. we just go and visit sometimes.
"She can't be chewing stuff up..."
12 weeks old is very young and teething is normal.
1. Supervision: This is the most essential element of any kind of training. Puppies, especially when they're very young, have to be watched constantly so that they can experience consistency in terms of actions and consequences.
2. That said, if you work, then you can't always be watching your pup and that's where crate training comes in. Some people think crating a dog is inhumane. They're very wrong. My dog (and every dog I've ever known) when properly crate trained, likes being in his/her crate and will seek it out when anxious or just when they want to have a snooze. It takes some patience but it is worth it. It's also a great aid for housetraining.
3. If you don't want to crate train then confine your pup to the kitchen or bathroom when you're out.
4. EXERCISE your dog. A tired dog is a good dog. If she's worn out and napping, she can't be chewing stuff up.
5. As others have suggested, provide her with good chew toys (that DON'T look like shoes or anything you don't want her to chew).
6. Use bitter apple and bitter lime sprays. Some pets learn to like this stuff but, on the whole, it can be very effective. HOWEVER, remember to re-spray because it will wear off from day to day.
7. If your pup is chewing, make sure the apartment is puppy safe. I'm thinking of electrical chords in particular.
8. As for chewing on you...wow, I remember going through this with my puppy. Puppies have these really sharp little needle teeth so it HURTS! When she does it, make a little yelp and whimper like a hurt dog would. If that is inneffective then make your hand into a claw shape (bent fingers) and give her a little pinch on the back of the neck. Not hard enough to hurt, just a quick pressure from the fingertips. This is like the "nip" that a mother gives her puppy when the puppy bites too hard. (Courtesey of Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer.)
9. When it comes to her gnawing on you or "mouthing," don't worry too much. It will stop in the next couple of months.

 Q. How can i train my puppy to quit chewing on the cat? we got a puppy recently and he is doing well except that he wants to play with the cat constantly! our poor cat can't even walk on the floor without getting trampled and chewed on. right now, the puppy is too small to hurt her but i'm afraid that as he gets bigger, he might hurt her accidentally, plus the cat is not happy about this at all! he stops for a second when i say "no!" but then he goes right back to doing it. anyone know how to train him not to?
"Puppies love having playmates..."
I suspect you didn't take time to introduce the cat and the puppy.
Puppies love having playmates.
Puppies are obviously immature.
Puppies play bite and play rough because that's how they play with their litter mates. they don't understand that humans and cats are not dogs and should not be played with rough or bitten.
If the puppy actually goes beyond the cat's boundaries of patience, the cat WILL let the pup know. A quick clawed swipe to the nose does wonders when it comes to cats training dogs to be polite.
Your job is to teach the pup to be gentle. Hold the cat in your arms and present it to the pup to sniff. Don't allow the dog to make any threatening motions. A firm, but quiet NO should do.
Put the pup on a leash inside the house. You can hold onto the leash and take the dog to the area where the cat is. If the dog makes a rough or chasing move, you say firmly but calmly, NO and jerk the leash.
If you don't want to do that, carry training treats. Start training the dog to come. If you tell him NO and he stops, then call him to COME to you and when he's close enough to you to be able to hold his collar, reach down and say GOOD come, and give him a small training treat.
You must keep a close eye on him till he's fully trained so you can stop him EVERY time he starts to be rough or chase. You can use COME and/or SIT to stop him. Then reward him with a tiny training treat.
example:
chase starts - "NO", "Come, dog's name", (when he comes) GOOD Come, "Sit, dog's name", "Good sit". This way he knows you don't approve of him chasing the cat (or being rough with it) but that, if he comes to you, he'll get a treat, and if he sits for you, he'll get another treat.
This makes obeying your commands more desireable than playing rough with the cat. It takes time and consistant repetition. -!-

 Q. I'ts been awhile since i had a puppy. how do i get her to stop chewing cords? yes, that's right...power cords. my cell phone charger, my lamp cord, computer printer cord...grandma's oxygen hose.
this puppy was abandoned in my yard 3 weeks ago, and we went ahead and kept her after no one called to claim her after a week. we know this is temporary...but...
i've done everything i can remember (hot sauce on visible cords, making noises when i see her doing it, etc), but i can't remember how i broke my miniature schnauzer from chewing to help this new puppy quit chewing.
i tend to think i just bought a boat load of chewies and chew toys...but that sounds too easy...haha
help, please!!! haha
i forgot to add...right now, i'm guessing she's 10 to 12 weeks old...taking her to the vet next week to find out.
As soon as she bites through a "live" wire , she''ll stop!

 Q. What can i do to get my puppy to quit chewing on his tail? every time he's in his crate, he chews on his tail, right on the tip of it, i'm guessing out of boredom, i've noticed that it only takes a couple of hours (maybe less) for him to get bored and start chewing on his tail, when i come back home after a couple of hours, i let him out and he's all excited and wagging his tail, the problem is that he leaves blood everywhere his tail touches, it doesn't bleed to the point of dripping blood even if he's sitting still, it's just when his tail hits the walls in the house, it stops bleeding after a minute or two, but i don't know how to cure his tail or even if there's something i could do to keep him from chewing his tail? i've considered that cone that goes on his head and a muzzle, but that puppy can use his paws like if they were hands, he'd get rid of those in a minute.
any ideas?
Give him several toys and get a baby gate and keep him in the kitchen or bathroom. Some dogs just cannot tolerate a crate for very long.

 Q. Does anyone know how to get a 6 month old puppy to quit digging and chewing things up? the dog is a lab/rot
"My dogs have always had stuff to chew on that was okay..."
Both are normal dog behavior, you probally can not stop it but you can make it appropriate (less destructive). My dogs have always had stuff to chew on that was okay, lots of toys chew bones etc. They both learned what they could and could not chew on. When they had something that was not theirs I would take it away and tell them no, and would then give them one of their toys and praise them. There are also sprays you can but at pet stores that leave an awful taste in their mouth, I used Bitter Apple. My dogs then associated certain things as awful tasting and left it alone. Dogs dig for a couple of reasons to find a cool spot, to bury something they want to hide til later or because they are bored. The more exercise and play time you give a dog the less they find energy or a need to be destructive. You probally will not stop his digging but you can give him a place to dig. Get him a small sand box bury some of his toys in it and encourage him to dig there. You really have to keep them busy or they find their own way of doing it.

 Q. How can i get my 1 1/2 year old puppy to quit chewing me out of house and home? ? first it was kids toys- we made sure everything was put away. then books- made sure all of that was put up! then we'd come home and trash would be knocked over- we lock up the trash in the laundry room when we're gone... now her flavor of choice is electronics- remotes, xbox headsets, nintendo ds's! heeeelp! and of course she does all of this when we're not home. she's the sweetest little thing (terrier and poodle mix) but she's a little devil when we're not home! oh, did i mention she caught a bird this morning and dragged it into the house? yeah... nice huh? how can we discipline her since this all happens when we're not around? again... heeeeeelp!
forgot to mention: we have another dog, she's older (almost 10 yrs old). we leave access to the back yard when we're gone because of her... she has "to go" a lot! we have had several dogs and all chewed as puppies but they were all over with that by this age. we have never had to crate train a dog before and i'm affraid that it's too late to start this with her. she never really chewed on much before, it just started up recently. my son was injured 2 months ago and that's when this behavior really started. he used to walk her everyday and now my other son does. she gets walked almost everyday, has plenty of chew toys, gets treats for good behavior and gets plenty of love!
"She's chewing because she's bored..."
At a year and a half, she's chewing because she's bored. I don't know if kennel training would be successful at her age but I'd definitely try. Don't give up the first time she cries though. Make sure she has lots of chew toys in there with her (tough ones!!!) and an old blanket to snuggle in. Don't use a doggy bed, she'd probably rip it apart - mine does and she's not a chewer. Leave the TV or radio on for company and a light if its dark when you leave or come home. Give her lots of love when you come home. If not, the laundry room might be a better choice for for the dog than the trash although baseboards are mighty tasty to a chewer. Lots of chew toys!!!!!
Add: What was your one son doing on their walks that this one isn't. The timing is pretty coincedental! Still, try the crate, what do you have to loose?

 Q. Puppies,,,,adopted one that the owners could not keep,,? how do i get my 16 week old lab puppy to quit chewing up my house? i have bough bones chew toys,,i have even given it old stuffed animals to chew...also he is going to be fixed in december,,will that calm him down and will he still mark his territory in the house? he does really good with pottying outside,,i just need advise on lab puppies....
"Will stop from chewing..."
There are sooo many things that can be causing this.
One. The puppy is most likely teething. you can buy those toys that you wet, and then stick in the freezer so they are ice cold,.. that feels good on their teeth.
Two. You need to wear the puppy out. Take it for runs, walk, play fetch, ect. When they are tired or excercised properly, they will sleep, and wont be bored with their bones.
Three. Getting him neutered will definately help, but dint let everyone tell you that THAT is why he is doing this. What most people dont realize is that when you get your puppy neutered, you are also getting them neutered around the time they stop teething, grow a little more, get out of the first stage of puppy hood AND when they are completely potty trained, so people give a lot of "credit" to getting the dogs fixed, fixing problems when normally its not just that.
Also, putting Cayenne pepper in spots you dont want chewed on outside, and putting sour spray or ginger on things inside, will stop from chewing. For wood (if the dog likes the "sour" sprays like mine did) mix cayenne pepper on the wood polisher... put a little polish down then rub in some Cayenne on the bottom where they would chew and that will help there
Feel free to let me know if you need any other tips

 Q. Do cocker spaniels ever quit chewing on things after growing out of puppy stage? we right now have a 11 week old c.spaniel and she of course now chews on everything, even though we bought her dog bones to chew on, like the vet said.and do they ever out grow peeing when they get excited when they see you ?
"Will chew when they are bored and puppies will when they are teething but..."
It isn't just cocker spaniel babies that chew most dogs will chew when they are bored and puppies will when they are teething but yours has awhile to go before that. You have to puppy proof your home just as you would baby proof it. Leather is a natural thing for them to chew on so be sure that all your shoes are put away. Remember never start them on something now that you won't want them to have later.
As far a peeing when they get exited...............well again just like a baby they have to train themselves and their bladders. It is hard to say if this is submissive behavior or just an exited baby. Wait for a bit........don't get upset when it happens just think about a human baby that takes up to 2-3 years to fully toilet train. Be calm and reassuring build your puppy's confidence and the problem should take care of itself.
Good luck and enjoy your pup
